Carter County is considered the gateway to the Southern Highlands. It is known for its’ beautiful natural sites including the Watauga River, which is a trophy trout stream, pristine Watauga Lake, the Appalachian Trail and the mile high Rhododendron Gardens on Roan Mountain. It was settled in the late 1760’s, and it is home to the first permanent settlement outside of the original 13 colonies. Sycamore Shoals at the confluence of the Doe and Watauga Rivers, was the site of the largest private land deal in American History, with the purchase of 20 million acres of land known as the Transylvania Purchase.
The county has a fast growing real estate market offering many types of properties. There are existing homes and commercial buildings available. There are lots for new construction, parcels of land for development and properties available in private gated communities.
