Johnson County is situated between several thriving tourism markets. To the southeast, our county borders the North Carolina High Country, so we are near Boone with its’ many attractions, activities and adventures. We are within one hour of several ski resorts, including Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Appalachian Ski Resort.
To the northwest, our county borders Virginia, so we are close to the booming tourism market of Damascus. Here you will find the famous Virginia Creeper Trail where over 225,000 people come yearly to experience this awesome bike trail.
To the west of our county is the Tri-cities area of Virginia. Here you will find the active tourism markets of Bristol, Kingsport and Johnson City, so we are close to the world famous Bristol Motor Speedway. This area is also home to the Tri-cities Airport which has flights to and from many major airports in the United States.
To the south, our county borders the quickly growing tourism market of Carter County, which is known for its’ many natural sites including Watauga River, Watauga Lake and the mile high Rhododendron Gardens on Roan Mountain.

Our area is a great place to live for many reasons. We have an abundance of beautiful natural resources that provide an incredible variety of outdoor adventures. We are home to the 8,600 acre Doe Mountain Family Wilderness Area offering many types of adventure trails including ATV trails, hiking trails, mountain biking trails and horse trails. We also have many other great hiking trails with great views and gorgeous waterfalls. We have Watauga Lake, which is said to be the third cleanest lake in America, offering all types of water sports including swimming, fishing, kayaking, and motor boats. Many outdoor enthusiasts decide to live here and enjoy the wonders of nature.
Attractions in Johnson County
We have many engaging attractions located in our area of North East Tennessee. We have several historical sites, two museums and an historic grist mill. We also have Heritage Hall which is a first class theatre, and an active art center providing ongoing classes and showcasing the works of artisans from the Appalachian Mountains. We are also an American Viticultural Area with a gorgeous vineyard and two local wineries. We have a growing community of art, theatre and wine lovers moving to the area.

Our area has plenty of activities to enjoy when you live here. We have great shopping opportunities including local craft stores, art galleries, intimate antique shops and multi-dealer antique and collectible warehouses. We have some excellent local restaurants that offer great dining experiences. There are many local long running annual festivals offering food, music and family entertainment. There are several live music venues showcasing local musicians and an active year round Farmers Market providing fresh produce and local products. Active young retirees are moving to the area to enjoy the many activities.
